Tilgate Park Photoshoot – The Cooper Family and the Magical Fairies!

Oh July, how I miss you! With your blue sunny skies and long balmy evenings, we really couldn’t have planned a more perfect day for The Coopers’ Tilgate Park Photoshoot here in Crawley, West Sussex.

I used to work with Katja at BA Holidays, infact she was the person I was ‘buddied’ with on my first day back in January 2005 when Greg was ‘just’ her boyfriend and the kids were a mere dot on the horizon. I saw Katja get engaged, then married to her love and before long, their two beautiful daughters Sophia and Amelie came along too. When Kat got in touch to book a family photoshoot, I literally couldn’t get her in the diary quick enough! I’d seen lots of photos of the girls on Facebook and knew how photogenic they would be and wanted a chance to photograph them, along with Mum & Dad, and Greg’s parents too.

Tilgate Park was our location of choice, a regular spot for me and always a lovely backdrop. Due to work schedules we were able to get together on a Tuesday afternoon which meant the park was nice and quiet, perfect!

Katja was a little worried that the girls wouldn’t be on their best behaviour, or shy away from the camera and this is something that I get a LOT. And you know what? I actually like that! My sessions are really focussed on a documentary style of photography, a snapshot of your lives at that moment in time. I do very little curating, instead waiting for natural moments to unfold.. and not too surprisingly, when that involves a 4 year old and a toddler, it isn’t always going to be smiles and giggles. Anyone who is around my age (35) will have some sort of Olan Mills portrait up in their parents house somewhere, and I’m sure we all find them hilarious now.. I know of one for sure where I’m in a sailor dress perched on a stool, and I am absolutely certain that the minute that camera stopped snapping, I was acting like a proper 4 year old! I would far rather capture children and document them for who they are.

So with that all said, the relaxed nature of our session really led to them having a couple of hours of quality family time, I just happened to be there taking a few snaps too.

Sophia was pretty obsessed with fairies at the time of our shoot, and was a great way for Mum & Dad to distract her ‘Can you see any fairies?’ so when I was editing their final pictures, I did a special one-off edit just for Sophia which you’ll see when you have a look at the pictures below 🙂 I sent this image to Katja with the following words… “I was looking through the pictures this morning and you can imagine my surprise when I noticed that there REALLY were fairies at our photoshoot yesterday…” Kat replied saying that I had the magic touch – I’m not sure about that, but I certainly had LOTS of fun!

Here are a selection of the photos from our time together, if you like what you see or are inspired to book your own photoshoot, why not get in touch? lucy@candyflossandbowties.com
