Current Wedding Song Trends by PerfectDISCOS///

When I photograph a wedding I’m always interested to see what the couple choose as their first dance. Often it’s a classic, or a song that has a personal meaning, other times it’s a current chart song that they just love. I wanted to find out a little more about current wedding song trends and knew just who I could turn to!

Ryan’s DJ’ing skills first grabbed my attention at a friend’s 30th earlier this year. As designated driver for the evening I would be unlikely to bust out any moves, but his set of top tune after tune kept me on the dance floor and we ended up staying till the bitter end (well, almost) a definite rarity when it comes to sober Lucy (drunk Lucy is quite the opposite FYI).

So when another friend was on the lookout for someone to play at her recent 18th, I didn’t hesitate in recommending PerfectDISCOS/// and it’s safe to say the evening was a great success, with Ryan keeping the crowd very happy all night. We were also there in a semi-professional capacity, providing our fun ‘party studio’ photobooth (another blog post to follow on that!) and the 2 seemed to work brilliantly together.

Ryan has very kindly written this month’s guest blog post for us, where he is chatting all the latest trends in wedding first dances, so without further ado, here’s Ryan….!

“Music is my passion and I have been a DJ for most of my life. From a young boy aspiring to be a Radio DJ to mixing the latest tunes at house parties in the late nineties, being the DJ has been my thing. Becoming a mobile DJ was the obvious choice, for fun at first, but now for a successful career path that I’m loving to follow.

All types of music get played in my house and I am always finding new stuff to listen to and enjoy. With my own eclectic musical collection, I know how to keep a wide range of tastes satisfied at parties. I have been a mobile DJ for over 15 years and although technology, trends and music formats has changed a lot, the fundamental basis of a party hasn’t changed – to have FUN! That is my number one priority when I DJ, to ensure that everybody does.

Musical Trends for a wedding first dance 2015:

Ed Sheeran has struck gold with his ode to everlasting love in “Thinking Out Loud”. Since it’s release, it is without doubt the most requested first dance song at weddings. I’m sure it will be around for a while to come. I’m not sick of it yet!

New artists such as Lady Antebellum, The Overtones and Sam Smith are being chosen also for their smooth vocals and because they both have a big nod to past eras of classic records. Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke still prove that their music transcends the ages, as they are chosen in people’s playlists a lot.

The trend for a “surprise” break in the first dance to showcase a choreographed routine is slowly moving out of fashion, and will most likely become obsolete before too long. I guess unless you can think of something that hasn’t been done on Youtube, then we’ve all seen it before. That said, I have seen some amazing routines!

At one wedding I DJ-ed at, I saw this unique first dance idea that I thought was totally brilliant. I was asked to play Percy Sledges “When A Man Loves A Woman” for a couples first dance but then make out the song was stuck after the first verse. I had to try and look perplexed for a few seconds until the groomsmen stepped in and sang, “A Capella”, the rest of the song. It blew everyone away!”
