St Ann’s Wells Garden Family Photoshoot, Hove

Cath’s partner Tim contacted me last Christmas about surprising his girlfriend and her two daughters Lucy & Izzy with a photo shoot.

I was only too happy to oblige and put together a custom made package with a gift certificate that Tim could give them as a present.

Over the past few months, and after a few conversations with Cath, the date was booked and fingers were crossed for a beautiful autumnal day. We were in luck!

Cath actually suggested the location of St Ann’s Wells Garden for her family photoshoot in Hove, East Sussex. This is a beautiful park that I hadn’t been to before, so it was fun to explore a new photo shoot venue and with it’s little ‘hidden’ nooks and multi levelled green spaces, it provided a super backdrop for our shoot.

Spotting 3 gorgeous looking ladies outside the cafe, where we’d chosen to meet, I knew instantly it was them and already knew that photographing them was going to be a dream. The girls told me that they’d never had a photo shoot before or even any real professional photos taken of them, Cath was particularly camera shy and they didn’t know too much about what to expect from their session.

I chatted through the plan, I said that my shoots are relaxed and fun, with no pressure or agenda. I just wanted them to relax as much as they could, and I would do the rest. We set off for a wander and found a couple of spots to capture some pictures. With the first leaves starting to change, we were extremely lucky to have a backdrop of green and brown foliage, really helping to make the images ‘pop’.

We walked around St Ann’s Wells Garden and found a few different places to snap. I got some portrait pictures of the girls in the ‘walled garden‘ and even encouraged Cath to pose for a few, isn’t she stunning?!

Cath let slip that the girls were particularly good at doing cartwheels so I just had to get them to show off their skills!

With the more ‘serious’ portraits done, I wanted the girls to play and be care-free. Not only would this make for some lovely natural images, but would be fun too! There is a playground at one end of the park, so we strolled through the gardens and into the play area.

In here we captured loads of pictures of the girls playing on swings and slides, plus some shots of them sitting and jumping off the logs. Lucy conquered her fears and tackled the ‘rope walk’ and after watching fearless Izzy swing from the rope rungs, she plucked up the courage to have a go at doing that too, well done Luce!

I had an absolutely fantastic morning photographing all three of them, and they embraced it tremendously! Cath faced her fears of having her photo taken and hopefully she nows has some memories to treasure and some precious pictures for her walls at home!
