The Fairy Tale Spring Fair Brighton, East Sussex

On Saturday we packed up the car with the camera gear and a selection of prints and headed down to The Open Market in Brighton for The Fairy Tale Spring Fair. What an awesome venue!

We unloaded the kit in one of the nifty bays allocated and Ash went off to park the car for the day while I set up our table. I hadn’t expected to have a proper stall but a very last minute cancellation enabled me to have a space in the middle of the action, which was fantastic, although I was rather unprepared and had hurriedly thrown what I could together! I took a selection of the prints that I have available for sale and my wedding and portrait portfolio, it’s nice to just chat with potential clients and tell them all about what we do at Candy Floss & Bow Ties Photography.

I was there as ‘official photographer’ and the table was a bonus so Ash manned that whilst I did my thing. Starting with some shots of my fellow artists/makers/crafts preparing for the day, I then went and chatted with each stallholder individually. As well as a great opportunity to take some pictures of them and their products, it is a super chance to network, see what they do and throw any collaboration ideas around too. I LOVE meeting new people and this is a part of my job that I really cannot get enough of!

Just like the last Fairy Tale Fair that I photographed a couple of weeks ago, it was incredibly well organised and a pretty decent footfall of visitors was noted. I think this was impacted a little by the dreary day and the fact we’d all lost an hours sleep but many traders seemed to be making sales which is always lovely to see. Claire Montgomery of Cat-a-Cake Creations is the brains behind the vintage themed fairs and she puts in an incredible amount of work to promote each of her fairs, chatting with the business owners on my way round, that certainly doesn’t go un-noticed.

The Patcham Silver Youth Band did a great job of entertaining the crowds and music director Sandra was a pleasure as always to chat to. It’s always a joy to talk with someone who shows such passion towards what they do. She works with a talented bunch of kids and I thought their 80’s medley was brilliant, totally in my element!

Later in the day, Kate (of Great British Bake Off 2014 fame) dropped in to show her support of the event too so Claire grabbed the opportunity for a picture, thanks Kate!

These fairs have really opened my eyes to the number of extremely talented small business owners we have around us in our local area. With creative and beautiful gifts which have all been lovingly handmade, you are much more likely to find a different kind of a gift, be it for a birthday, wedding or occasion such as Easter, and something that has had real love put into it. I for one, will be using these fairs in future to purchase presents for friends and family rather than resorting to the high street.

The next Fairy Tale Fair is taking place on Sunday 24th May at The Open Market again and I hope to be back. If you’re in the area, do check out their website and Facebook page and maybe we’ll see you there!
