Theo & Megan’s Photoshoot in Crawley, West Sussex

Saturday saw a really exciting day for me as I got to photograph my own gorgeous nephew and niece, Theo & Megan.

I hadn’t done a studio session with them until now and call me biased, but I just could not wait to get them in front of the camera and get some shots of them and their gorgeous big eyes!

They live in Worthing and came up to Crawley on Saturday morning, where Nick, Ash and myself had set up our vinyl backdrop and lights. Keen to play with our new Pixapro lighting kit, we used the 2 new Pixapro Lumi 400 (800w) lights with umbrellas to light the kids with our 2 ‘old’ neewer lights and softboxes to light the backdrop.

I took a variety of props and things to entice / bribe them with but as always with children’s shoots, it’s very much about their mood and what they will or won’t do, so we always take a fairly relaxed approach to this, whilst trying to capture a nice variety of images for Mum & Dad.

Theo was a little star, at the age of 3 1/2 he took direction very well and we played with plastic balls, followed by a little bit of posing work with the beanbag and our vintage suitcase / wicker hamper. Megan was more interested in waddling around at the back of the shots – which in turn gave me some shots that were bursting with personality – and are still making me laugh – although she did come and perch with her big brother for a few pictures. Megs is only 1 1/2 years old and once she’d decided enough was enough then that was that!

Keen to get our beautiful 120cm octogon grid softbox out, we had a change of setup towards the end. We switched out the 2 ‘back’ lights in order to underexpose the white backdrop to give a grey background and used the octogon softbox very close to the subject to create a beautiful feathered light and soft final image. These required very little manipulation in the post production phase thanks to Nick really nailing the desired effect in camera.

To finish off, Meg (being the Daddy’s girl that she is) let Derek hold her for a few pictures and when I could coax her out of snuggling into his tshirt, Nick was ready to capture the most beautiful images, that I am so proud of.
