Tom & Amy’s Engagement Photoshoot, West Sussex

“We weren’t expecting to have so much FUN!’ – This has to be one of my favourite things to hear from my clients and Tom and Amy were no exception after their summery engagement photoshoot.

When it comes to engagement photoshoots, as well as being a lovely thing to commemorate your celebrations with, it is a super opportunity to get you in front of the camera, practice some poses and give you a bit of a taster ahead of the big day. I find it not only helps my couples to understand what they can expect on the day from us, but also helps them feel much more relaxed, which in my mind ALWAYS equals better photos.

We met down in Littlehampton on this Sunday afternoon, another beautiful sunshiny day (we have been SO lucky this year!) and once we’d said our hello’s to the future Mr & Mrs Reed, we took a stroll to see what we could find.

This was my first shoot set in Littlehampton, I wanted to do something ‘beachy’ and having many fond memories of my own here, I knew this sandy haven would be a perfect backdrop. The amusement park and harbour would also add different points of interest, giving us some fun setups for the pictures.

Conscious that there were a good number of people around, the first thing I wanted to do was ensure they both felt relaxed. There’s nothing worse than that feeling of being watched (!) and I always want my clients to feel comfortable.

We headed into Harbour Park (amusement park) and started with a few casual shots by the dodgems. This didn’t draw unwanted attention (even with Nick holding a diffuser above their heads!) and enabled me a chance to have a play with the camera settings. The sky was clear & bright so once I’d got myself set up, I knew I wasn’t going to need to play around too much.

Nick and I had been for a little scout around before Tom & Amy arrived and had spied a cute ice cream parlour which would be a great backdrop for some photos. We headed there next and after plying them with some lurid colour ice-cream (because it’d look good in the pictures…) we got to capturing some memories.

The harbour wall was closed for renovation (a shame as I think some pictures on here would be good, perhaps next time!) so we made our way back through Harbour Park, stopping for some spontaneous photos en-route. By this point, Tom & Amy had really relaxed into the afternoon and people were passing by just getting on with their own thing. In some ways I think the great British public see a couple of professional photographers with cameras and gear and tend to look the other way through fear of being roped into ‘something’!!

We headed for the beach and had them do some fun, silly poses – all of which perfectly reflected the cutesy, fun vibe of the shoot. I then spotted a candy floss stand and felt we were destined to incorporate it! I had a chat with the operator who VERY kindly allowed Tom to have a go at spinning some floss for Amy. There are some things you can’t prepare for on a shoot, this is one of those moments and it turned out to be one of my favourite parts of the day!

We took them through the passageway (where Amy nearly got blown away by a freak gust of wind!) out onto the green and got a few pictures with the candy floss and of Amy’s engagement ring. We also took 20 minutes to sit down and have a chat through their wedding day. We talked about their hopes and expectations, were able to ease their worries and made notes of the big day’s running order so that we could go away and start our own prep.

We finished up with a few pictures down on the beautiful sandy beach. In Sussex, we are lucky to have a few sandy beaches, and this has to be one of my favourites. The crowds had thinned a little as it was getting later in the day and Nick did a super job of capturing some natural pictures of Tom & Amy by the water’s edge.

We had a fantastic afternoon and are now very excited to photograph their wedding at Gatton Manor in August 🙂
